This familiar peacock butterfly is beautifully mounted in a 10x10cm frame on a plain white mount. A well-loved sight across England and the rest of the UK, this striking resident is scientifically known as Aglais io. It is a medium-sized species instantly recognisable to local nature lovers by its rich velvety-red wings, each adorned with a huge multi-coloured eyespot resembling those on a peacock's feather. These brilliant violet, blue, and gold eyespots serve as a powerful defence mechanism to startle predators, contrasting beautifully with a dark, almost black underside that allows it to blend seamlessly into garden sheds, hollow trees, and log piles while surviving diapausing over winter.
